Hello again!!
April is Financial Literacy month. This is the time where many financial firms and professionals advocate for financial freedom and success. They will define terms and philosophies that are associated with money. Investment strategies and ideas will flow through their websites and advertisements from your financial institution to your inbox. Some common themes that will be addressed, this month in particular, will be those associated with debt, investing, compound interest, savings, home ownership, education, and so many more. Although all of these things are very important in finance, and I will cover multiple topics in future posts, they do not emphasize the most important factor of financial freedom, Y.O.U.
Your Own Undertaking is the most important aspect of your personal finances. The most straight forward definitions of “undertake” I found was on wodnik.com:
1. “To deliberately begin to do (something);”
2. “To pledge or commit oneself (to do something);”
3. “To promise or guarantee;”
4. “To make oneself responsible …”
Money affects every aspect of your life so having control of your finances and committing to good financial habits is essential to your wealth building journey. Having a monthly budget, setting financial goals, saving, investing, and spending are all parts of your greater financial well-being. Your undertaking is inclusive of all of these details. In order for all of these parts to work to your benefit, you have to be committed to the lifelong process of your controlling your money.
What you may not realize is that you have the ultimate control. Yes, there are financial details of which you do not control. You cannot control how the stock market reacts to an event. You are unable to control things such as grocery prices, consumer goods, or utilities. However, you decide how your money gets spent on these items. You decide where your money goes. Please don’t underestimate the power of Y.O.U.
Regardless of your current financial situation, you have the power to change it. You can decide to take steps to align your financial needs and desires with your undertaking.
Your finances are ALL ABOUT Y.O.U. !!
